The full picture

Bank Polska Kasa Opieki, known as Bank Pekao, is one of the largest banks in Poland. It offers everyday banking services like checking accounts, loans, mortgages, and credit cards to millions of individual customers, as well as financial services to businesses and corporations. It is the second-largest bank in Poland by assets and has deep roots in the country going back to 1929.

Pekao makes money primarily through interest income — charging more on loans than it pays on deposits — as well as fees for banking services and investment products. It operates almost entirely within Poland, giving it a focused but concentrated geographic footprint. The Polish government, through state-controlled entities, holds a significant ownership stake, which provides stability but also limits fully independent strategic decisions. The key risk facing Pekao is interest rate sensitivity, as falling rates in Poland could compress its net interest margin and reduce profitability.
