Winston Score History

The full picture

Impala Platinum Holdings, known as Implats, is one of the world's largest producers of platinum group metals (PGMs), which include platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals are used mainly in catalytic converters for cars, as well as in jewelry and industrial processes. The company mines and refines these metals primarily in South Africa and Zimbabwe, with additional operations in Canada through its Impala Canada subsidiary.

Implats sells its refined metals to automakers, chemical companies, and jewelry manufacturers around the world. It generates revenue by mining ore, processing it into refined metal, and selling it on global commodity markets — meaning its earnings are heavily tied to PGM prices, which can swing sharply. The company's large, long-life mines and integrated refining capacity give it a cost and scale advantage over smaller rivals. The biggest risk it faces is the ongoing decline in palladium and rhodium prices, driven by slower automotive demand and the gradual shift toward battery electric vehicles, which do not use catalytic converters.
