The full picture

Matson is a shipping company that moves cargo across the Pacific Ocean. It runs container ships that carry goods like food, cars, and retail products between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, and several Pacific island nations. Matson is one of the oldest and largest ocean carriers serving Hawaii, and it holds a protected position there under a U.S. law called the Jones Act, which requires cargo between U.S. ports to be carried on American-built, American-crewed ships.

Matson makes money by charging customers to ship containers on its vessels. It also runs a logistics business that arranges freight transportation on land and through other carriers. The company operates primarily in U.S. domestic trade lanes and select international Pacific routes, generating roughly $3–4 billion in annual revenue. The Jones Act gives Matson a durable competitive advantage in Hawaii, but its earnings can swing significantly based on shipping demand, fuel costs, and the volume of goods moving through its trade lanes.
