The full picture

HSBC Holdings is one of the largest banks in the world, headquartered in London but deeply rooted in Asia. It offers everyday banking services like checking accounts, loans, and credit cards to regular customers, and also helps large businesses and governments move money, raise capital, and manage risk. The bank is especially well known for connecting businesses that trade between Asia and the rest of the world.

HSBC makes money through interest on loans, fees for financial services, and income from its wealth management and investment banking divisions. It operates in over 60 countries, with Hong Kong and mainland China generating a large share of its profits, making it more exposed to Asia than almost any other Western bank. Its deep roots in Asian trade finance give it a competitive edge, but its heavy reliance on China also means that slowdowns in the Chinese economy or rising geopolitical tensions between East and West are among its biggest ongoing risks.
