The full picture

Owl Rock Capital Corporation is a business development company (BDC) that lends money to mid-sized private companies across the United States. These are typically businesses too large for traditional bank loans but too small to easily raise money in public markets. It is managed by Blue Owl Capital and is one of the largest publicly traded BDCs in the country.

ORCC makes money primarily from interest income on the loans it originates, mostly senior secured first-lien debt. It is required to distribute most of its taxable income to shareholders as dividends, making it popular with income-focused investors. Its large scale gives it access to bigger deals and helps it diversify risk across many borrowers. The key risk is that rising defaults among borrowers during an economic slowdown could reduce earnings and erode the value of its loan portfolio.
